EDWIN
WINCHESTER MATTHEWS was born in Philadelphia PA on May 20, 1895 to Clarence and
Catherine D.
Matthews. His family had moved to 1023
Segal
Street in North Camden by 1906. By 1914 the Matthews clan was living
at 334 Warren
Avenue, two blocks east of Haddon Avenue.
Edwin
Mathews was working as a laborer at the factory of
Warren Webster &
Company on Point
Street when he registered for the draft on June 5,
1917. He was drafted on May
21, 1918 and sent to Camp Dix NJ, where he was assigned to the 14th
Company, 153rd Depot Brigade. On May 27th he was attached to the 407th
Engineers as a wagoner. He died on October 1, 1918 from Spanish
influenza, and was buried in Camden.
Edwin
Matthews was survived by his parents, of the
Warren
Avenue address.
