PRIVATE EDWARD M. McGOWAN was born on November 29, 1893 to John J. and Mary J. McGowan. He was also recorded as being named Edwin McGowan. Along with another son, Joseph, the McGowan family lived at 49 Marlton Avenue in Camden NJ. The elder McGowan worked as a clerk in a grocery store, then as a huckster, and he would go on to owning his own grocery later in life. Edward McGowan married shortly after registering for the draft in une of 1917. He and his wife Emily E. McGowan lived with his parents at the Marlton Avenue address. In December of 1918, a son Edward M. Jr. was born. Private Edward McGowan was training with the School Company 122 at the Machine Gun School at Camp Hancock, August GA, when he died of pneumonia on January 15, 1919. His body was returned to New Jersey and he was buried in Camden. His parents were still living on Marlton Avenue as late as April of 1930. |
