CHARLES J. SHIDE was born around 1893. In 1910 he was living with his older sister Anna and brother-in-law Louis Krueger in Philadelphia PA. Another older sister, Rose, also resided with them. The family moved to New Jersey some time later, probably after June of 1917, when Charles Shide registered for the draft. He was then working as a bartender for Jacob Strecker at Frankford Avenue  and Somerset Streets in Philadelphia. Louis Krueger was an electrician by trade, and had moved to Chesilhurst NJ by January of 1920, and apparently Charles Shide also went to New Jersey before being called to national service.

Private Charles Shide died of pneumonia while serving in France on October 6, 1918.
