FIREMAN SECOND CLASS CARL
BURDETTE BUTCHER was the son of
Charles Monroe Butcher and his wife, the former Minnie Burdette. He was
born in New Jersey in 1897. The family was living at 931
Broadway
in Camden when the 1906 Camden City Directory was compiled. Charles M.
Butcher was then the manager of Kain's Pharmacy at the corner of
South
5th and Pine
Streets in Camden. The Butcher family had moved to 121
Fourth Avenue in Haddon Heights, New Jersey by the time Census was taken
in 1910. Charles Butcher was still working in drug stores.
Carl
B. Butcher enlisted in the United
States Navy on April 11, 1917 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By the fall
of 1918 he had been promoted to Fireman Second Class.
Fireman
Second Class Butcher died of bronchial pneumonia at
New York City, New York on October 11, 1918. He was survived by his
parents and siblings Virginia and Luther Butcher. The family was still
living in Haddon Heights as late as April of 1930.
The
now defunct Hoyle-Butcher Post 149 of the American Legion, which for
many years was located at Kings Highway and West Atlantic Avenue in
Haddon Heights, was named in part for Carl Butcher.
