GRIFFEE PLACE, also known as Griffee Alley, still partially exists. Griffee Place begins as an alley between 519 and 521 Benson Street that ran north to an courtyard that spanned the rear of the lots from 517 to 523 Benson Street. Two homes, 314 and 316 Griffee Place stood on the east side of the courtyard as lat as 1947. The homes on Griffee Place appear on Sanborn Maps as early as 1885, as 521-1/2 Benson Street. Griffee Place does not appear in the 1870 Camden City Directory, however it is listed, as Griffee's Alley in the 1872 edition. While the alley and most of the courtyard still exist, the land where the two homes stood, as well as 521 and 523 Benson Street are now part of a parking lot. |
