The Story of a North Camden Family

Thomas Linthicum settled in the Annapolis area of the British Colony Maryland in the mid-16th century. He was Welsh and a land developer; the town of North Linthicum Heights remains there today. In 1905, many generations later, a descendant of Thomas, Herbert Otis Linthicum and his wife, Mary (Carson) relocated from Baltimore to North Camden residing at 827 Pearl Street. They lived at that address for the rest of their lives, raising seven children. Herbert died in 1953, Mary in 1971. Their children were all educated in the Camden School System graduating from either Camden or Woodrow Wilson High School. The family were active members of Linden Baptist Church.

Herb was foreman of the electro-type department of Westcott & Thompson, a major Philadelphia typographic firm. Sons Milliard and Alton followed in his foot steps, both assuming foremanship at the same firm. Grandson Kenneth also was an electrotyper until the trade began to dissolve in the 1960's due to technology changes.

The Children of Herbert and Mary Linthicum

Milliard Calvin (1899-abt. 1950) moved at East Camden and lived at 38 North 28th Street..

Alton Maynard (1904-96)  married Justine Braun, sister of one-time Camden City Clerk Otto Braun in 1927. By 1947 he also had made his home in East Camden, at 3625 Fremont Street.

Grace (1901-91) spent most of her business career at First Camden National Bank & Trust where she was an executive secretary at the time of retirement.

Ethel (1907-abt. 1965)

Harry (1915-91) was a teacher and historian.

Herbert Carson (1910-84) was a dentist with offices in the Walt Whitman Hotel Annex at 623 Cooper Street just off Broadway for many years. He made his home in Haddonfield NJ

Elsie (1919- ) married Charles Schaal a sales executive with J. B. Van Sciver.
