The Red Carpet

1037–1039 Broadway was from the 1980s into the late 1990s the home of the Red Carpet, which was owned and operated by Elaine Gardiner Brundage. Elaine Brundage operated the bar until about a year before her passing, at the age of 61, on December 25, 2000. Her companion Randy worked with her through the 90s. In the last few years the bar was open, her daughter Robin, sons Bobby and Marvin, and step-son James worked in the bar.

One of the most interesting sights in Camden in the late 1990s was on weekends, when Elaine would work the door at the Red Carpet, checking the identification of young people trying to get in.

The building was never occupied after the Red Carpet closed. A fire on January 28, 2012 left the Red Carpet heavily damaged, as was the adjacent vacant building at 1033–1035 Broadway. The fire appeared to have been set by trespassers in the Red Carpet’s basement. The interior was completely gutted and the roof collapsed. As of this writing, January 30, 2012 it would appear that the building will soon be demolished.
