The Oasis

Not to be confused with the Oasis Motel, which operated on the Admiral Wilson Boulevard from the 1960s through the later 1990s, The Oasis was opened up shortly after the 1934 repeal of Prohibition. Within a year the establishment had come to the attention of the police. Saloonkeeper Jack Bernstein, who had come to Camden from New York, was found guilty of having employed a minor as a barmaid. His license was apparently revoked at that point.

It is interesting to note that Jack Bernstein gave his address as 538 Kaighn Avenue, which was the location of another bar, run by the Bader family, known in the late 1940s as Gorham’s Cafe, and for decades after that as Bond’s Bar.
