Introduction
Back in a time when by reading the daily newspaper you could stay very informed about what was going on in your city or town, newspapers actually went into great detail reporting local news. A regular feature for the Philadelphia Inquirer as well as the local Camden papers was reporting on who received their annual liquor license renewals. Monthly happenings from the meetings of the Excise Commission, the city bureau that regulated liquor licenses, was also reported as it occurred.
Below is an article from the Philadelphia Inquirer of January 7, 1904 detailing who received retail liquor licenses, and who received wholesale licenses. The wholesale firms were for the most part bottlers and beer distributors. A few applications were tabled until the next meeting, one was refused, and one withdrawn.
Among the Sixth Ward licenses granted was John J. Keefe at 640 Pine Street — the address of McKenna’s Tavern.

Excise Commission Grants Licenses for the Year, But Only One New Applicant Will Get a Certificate—Saloons to Do Business at the Old Stand
The Camden Excise Commission last night granted licenses for the ensuing year. Altogether 208 retail and thirty-six wholesale licenses were granted, seven were laid over and one withdrawn. Only one new application was granted, that of Thomas O’Hara, Fifteenth and Federal streets.
The Law and Order League, generally represented at the meeting of the commission, was not in evidence. Two remonstrances were filed against the applications at Ninth and Ferry avenue and Fourth and Mickle streets. They were received and filed.
