Gretta's Inc.

Camden Bar
1898 River Avenue

Introduction

The bar at 1898 River Avenue in the Cramer Hill neighborhood sits near the intersection of River Avenue and 9th Street. The address appears in city directories with Niewinski’s Cafe in the 1940s, and by the mid-1960s was known as Walt’s Place.

Around 1970 the bar was taken over by Abner Deckert, a Navy veteran of World War II, and his wife Gretta, who gave the place its new name: Gretta’s Inc. The Deckerts operated the bar through the 1970s and into the 1980s.

By around 2000 the address was home to the Sunshine Lounge, which was still in operation in September 2003 when the photograph below was taken.
